A new online tool may help you make the most of your medical device coverage.
The Canadian Medical Association is hosting an online tool that will help you decide if your device is covered by the provincial health insurance plan, BC’s health care system.
“We’re very excited to have the CMA partner with the B.C. government to provide a very comprehensive and comprehensive tool that helps consumers make informed decisions on whether their device is compatible with the BC health plan,” said Dr. Marc LeBreton, president of the CMC, in a release.
“With a variety of options, you’ll be able to compare the costs and benefits of different device types, as well as the types of coverage that will apply to you.”
The tool is available on the CMM website at http://www.medicaldevices.ca.
It includes the cost of a device, as per the provincial plan, as a percentage of the device’s retail price.
It also shows how much the device will cost you if it is purchased through the provincial insurance plan.
If the device is purchased in person at your local medical supply store, it will be billed at the cost for that day, and if you don’t pick it up, the price will be reflected in your BC health bill.
You can also compare how much a device will be covered by BC Health’s provincial health plan, and what the cost will be for a full replacement.
The tool is also available at https://www1.gov.bc.ca/cbm/medicaldevices/tools/index.html.
“The CMA believes this tool will help consumers determine whether they are currently covered by a provincial health care plan or whether they might want to consider such a plan in the future,” said CMC President and CEO Dr. Julie Lebreton.
“It will also allow consumers to make informed choices about the cost, quality and safety of a medical device.”
LeBreton added that the tool has been developed by an independent team of researchers, and that they are hoping to expand its functionality to include more health device types in the coming months.
The CMA is currently looking for new sponsors for the tool, and says it hopes to launch a website for the project soon.
In the meantime, there are a number of other tools available that you can use to figure out if you have a BC health coverage.
