MANHATTAN, Texas — Man killed in a shooting at a Houston medical clinic was shot by a man who had a history of mental health issues, authorities said.
Manuel Perez, 20, was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.
The shooting occurred about 10 a.m.
Sunday in the 800 block of South Lamar.
Perez’s death is the second in less than a week.
Authorities identified the suspect as James Michael Perez, 26, of New Braunfels.
He has a history in the state prison system of possessing a handgun, authorities and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities were notified about the shooting when a resident called to report hearing gunfire.
An officer spotted Perez, who had his hands in the air, and told him to drop his hands, authorities wrote in the report.
The officer also reported seeing Perez on the ground, and Perez “repeatedly said ‘I’m sorry,’ before walking away from the officer and turning toward another location, the report said.
