Posted September 08, 2018 08:03:25Today is the first day that two medical marijuana dispensaries have opened in Washington State, as state lawmakers approved the first of several measures to legalize the recreational use of the drug.
Under the law, recreational use will be allowed in some small pockets of the state, such as in King County and in King of Prussia, but marijuana won’t be legal in all of them.
Washington’s governor, Jay Inslee, signed the bill into law this morning, just a day before it was scheduled to take effect.
In addition to the medical dispensary, three others will open in the next two weeks, including one in Spokane, where marijuana will be legal to purchase and sell.
The state also approved an increase in the number of recreational dispensaries from four to seven.
The measure allows the state to issue licenses to new businesses that would allow them to accept recreational sales.
The first dispensaries will open by the end of 2018, with an estimated population of between 1,500 and 2,000 people.
They will be located in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
