By Jennifer PhelanFor some, the word “medical” is a bit of a mouthful.
For some in Florida, it’s more than that.
The term “medical device” is becoming more common in Florida as the state grapples with a shortage of supplies and demand for medical devices in general.
In Miami, the first of many medical devices to be authorized by the state, the term “Medical Device Authorization Act” is the latest tool for doctors to make medical requests for their patients.
The bill, which has a co-sponsor in the Florida House of Representatives, also requires doctors to register with the state.
“I think it’s the first time in a long time that we’re going to have medical devices being authorized,” said Joe Tinsley, director of medical affairs at Miami-Dade Health.
“I’m just excited to see the trend continue.
I think the industry is looking to see if we can continue to expand that market.”
A growing demandThe medical devices industry is growing in Miami, according to medical device broker and investor Kevin Cottrell.
“We’re in the business of creating products that can help the people in need,” Cottrel said.
“Medical devices have always been a part of our business and now they’re even more so.”
Cottrell is bullish on the medical device industry, and says he expects the industry to grow from $11.3 billion in 2016 to $23.6 billion in 2021.
The medical device business is growing faster than the overall medical industry.
That’s partly because there’s so much demand for new medical devices.
“What is new is the fact that we can have more of these devices available at one time,” Cattrell said.
The state also allows doctors to purchase medical devices on the internet, which Cottrell says is the next big thing for the industry.
“The reason that we do that is because doctors have to be able to order them from anywhere,” he said.
“That’s something that the state is able to do, because we can order from anywhere.”
The state has been using a variety of different tools to allow doctors to order medical devices, including electronic order books, phone orders and the online ordering process.
“It’s a tool that allows us to do that on our own,” Cettrell said, adding that it also allows them to do other things like monitoring the condition of their patients or sending them medical reminders.
Cottrel also said that he sees a “new” trend in the medical devices market, where more hospitals are using mobile apps to order devices, such as heart monitors, to keep patients healthier.
But he’s not sure that it will be a permanent trend.
Cattrell says the number of medical devices approved by the Florida Health Department will likely decrease over the next few years.
“You’ll see a gradual reduction in those,” he explained.
The new medical device authorization bill, however, gives Florida doctors new tools to continue to be proactive.
“If I see something that’s causing concern or concerns, I can do a search on my computer and ask my doctor what to do,” Cttrell said of his bill.
“That’s the new approach.”
Cattrel is confident that doctors will continue to get medical devices authorized by Florida.
“This will allow us to continue the medical innovations that we’ve been able to make over the last several years,” he added.
“And we’ll continue to grow as a company.”
